Battle Abbey
The atmospheric ruins of Battle Abbey stand on the site of the famous battle of Senlac. The abbey was founded by William the Conqueror to celebrate his victory' over King Harold and as an atonement for the loss of life suffered. Visitors can see the spot where Harold fell, walk the now serenely peaceful battlefield and view fine example of surviving monastic Architecture. An audio-visual presentation relates the story of the battle and other attractions include an exciting exhibition in the gatehouse, a Georgian dairy and a newly-restored ice-house.
St Mary's Church
St Mary the Virgin is the church built on the Battlefield of 1066. On a visit to this historic church you will see a magnificent Romanesque nave, a Norman font with mediaeval cover, rare wall paintings of the 14th centuary, the gilded alabaster tomb of St Anthony Browne (to whom Henry VII granted the Abbey). Crusader crosses carved by sword and the Senlac Commemorative Window. Stewards are on duty to welcome you.Battle Museum of Local History
A small interesting display of artefacts on display
include a facsimile Domesday Book (Sussex) and Bayeux Tapestry, coins, maps,
assize records, dinosaur remains. Iguanodon footprint, a Saxon and Norman battle
scene and old toys and games/
Buckley's Yesterday's World
The whole family can experience a day in a bygone age
at Buckley’s. You can explore re-created shop and room displays, such as
Victorian kitchen, grocers, chemist, 1930’s railway station, and many more.
Enjoy push-button commentaries and smells, hands-on displays and a nostalgic
video show. Outside visit a lovely country garden with a childrens’s play
village and homemade fudge marquee. Live Music every Sunday during June, July
and August.
The Almonry and Town Model
Battle Town Model can be found in the Medieval Almonry,
also the Town Hall. From the days of gunpowder, clock making and leather products
you will be shown in a sound and light experience the contribution this lovely
town has made to our heritage.
The Hall of Fame
The absorbing exhibition of your favourite stars of
film, theatre, opera and ballet. See original signed photographs and theatre
designs in a charming old oak panelled hall. Rare memorabilia, video films and
sound cassettes.
